From Bubba to Babs

World, meet Babs:Isn’t she prudy? She was not always Babs. She had a sex change. Once upon a time, she was Bubba.

When I first began working from home, I was working on my wooden dining chairs with no padding. It was painful. I knew I needed a proper desk chair but was putting it off. I needed something cheap, too. One day I just couldn’t take it anymore and I made a desperate stop at Canal Furniture Liquidators. I was expecting to find a decent black office chair. They only had a few chairs and most of them were pretty busted. Then I found Bubba. He was an eyesore but comfy as hell and I knew he could be covered with some fabulous fabric. Best part: Bubba was only $19.99!! Sold.

I immediately knew I wanted a yellow and white print, possibly a graphic, to cover Bubba with. Given my tight budget, the only fabrics online I could find were cotton and didn’t appear to be very durable. I kept Bubba as is for a couple of weeks while I searched for fabric. Yes, the hideousness you’re about to witness below was in my home:

Then one day I was in Marshalls and found the perfect fabric. But it wasn’t actually “fabric” as Marshalls is not a fabric store. It was a Nicole Miller SHOWER CURTAIN!! The print was perfect and I just assumed that it would fit. When I got home and opened it I realized the print fit perfectly on Bubba. That made me insanely happy!! I had to do some hacking to the shower curtain to get it to fit. SPB came over with her sewing machine and we worked our magic. Alas, Babs was born!

Here she is from behind in all her glory:

I wish we had taken step by step photos of the transformation. But don’t worry we’ll post a tutorial on how to use a shower curtain to cover a chair soon! It’s been several months now and Babs has held up quite well (other than the tiny pink spot on her seat. That’s what happens when you share an office with a 2 year old).

Of coarse she is nothing in comparison to the Herman Miller Aeron Chair that I sat in for 6 years. But, given that the total cost of Babs was $35.00, I can’t complain!
